  2. Happy National Polka Music Month! Your ‘Life and Laughter’ column in the Sandy City Journal had my feet a tapping remembering my growing up years in Tucson listening to my mom’s Sunday morning ‘Polish Polka Time’ broadcasts. Thanks to the brand new Sandy City Cemetery memorial Niche addition (opening this Spring) my brother and I finally found a perfect resting place for mom’s ashes. But best of all her radio program will once again play Polka music after being silent for more than 50 years. We can thank current Internet technology and this short code engraved into the granite face of mom’s niche. Enjoy a preview of what is coming to the Sandy City Utah Cemetery here: http://sep.me/1xz

I enjoyed your article “Cold Feet”. It was very well written and many people who dread the cold, I’m sure, appreciated your article.

  14. During the 2010 Winter Olympics I worked with US Speedskating and we put together an arrangement for Stephen Colbert to sponsor the team. It was a blast! He came to Salt Lake for a day to film and then I worked with him again in Vancouver. The picture is from the long-track speedskating venue at the Olympics. He and his producers were fantastic to work with!

  18. Peri,

I enjoy you colums; full of wit and humor. Regarding Ringo, it sounds like you have your hands full, to say the least. I volunteer at Salt Lake County Animal Services on Saturdays. One of the newer services they offer is low- or no-cost six-week CGC (Canine Good Citizen) training classes. They’re included for shelter adoptions but anyone can sign up for only $40. It sounds like Ringo needs professional help. Strange as it may sound, letting him run willy-nilly to and fro like a crazed lunatic of a dog may be hilarious and great fodder for a column, but it is not the best for him. If you do decide to make the commitment to seek professional help, understand that the classes are not a magic wand. The majority of the progress will be done at home. In most all cases, the behavior gets worse before it gets better (yes, dogs do throw tantrums). It takes time and patience but Ringo can become a more balanced dog. Your column didn’t mention if Ringo is neutered; I assume he is. You cannot continue to “treat RIngo like the special aunt who wanders through the neighborhood in her underwear.” Being a Lab/Border Collie mix makes him a high maintenance dog. Twice-daily walks are the minimum (hopefully 35-45 minutes each). Ringo’s behavior is typical of high maintenance dogs. Many owners simply throw up their hands and the dog winds up at the shelter. Fortunately for Ringo, it sounds like you are committed to him. I hope to read about a more balanced Ringo in a future column. If you need further info about the classes, contact Salt Lake County Animal Services. Good luck.

    Ken
